Alexandria, VA, Nov. 2017: The Sentient Group, a woman-owned venture, has launched to bring valuable human sciences insight to public and private sector organizations.

Founded by Dr. Morwari Zafar, a University of Oxford-trained anthropologist, The Sentient Group adapts the human sciences to corporate cultures. With a focus on people and behavioral analysis, the company highlights the human context as a key aspect of what allows organizations to remain relevant and competitive in constantly evolving markets.

Sentient Group's Managing Partner Speaks at American Anthropological Association Conference

Washington DC, Nov. 30, 2017: The American Anthropological Association selected The Sentient Group Managing Partner, Dr. Morwari Zafar, as a speaker at its annual conference in Washington DC. Dr. Zafar presented her research at a panel entitled “In Matters of Peace, Security, and Foreign Policy: Anthropological Engagement and the Power Elite.”

Dr. Zafar drew upon her doctoral research to discuss the use and production of cultural knowledge for counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan. The presentation addressed the economy of cultural knowledge production by looking at the relationship between Afghan-American contractors as its producers and the U.S. military and defense industries as its consumers. As part of a series on the role of anthropology in the world, the talk highlighted the significance of the human element in the market for expertise that emerged in post-9/11 America.

Dr. Morwari Zafar

Dr. Morwari Zafar is an anthropologist with more than ten years experience in international development and national security. Her expertise has been focused on Afghanistan, migration, post-conflict development, and militarization. Dr. Zafar is a former fellow of the Center for a New American Security’s Next Generation National Security Leaders Program, and an avid writer. She has contributed articles to Time, Foreign Policy, Al Jazeera, and Granta. She holds a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Oxford, a M.A. in anthropology from the George Washington University, and a B.A. in English from the University of Puget Sound. In addition to English, she speaks Dari and French, and conversational Spanish.
